Funky Dory

www.funkydory.ca

From Website

Funky Dory has been on the go in St. John's since 2001. It's changed shape and members a couple of times since then, and the current lineup is brand new, but as funky as ever. The focus has also evolved, but has always kept a funky groove as its base. Probably the most well known influences currently include Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power, Rufus, James Brown, Jamiroquai, Average White Band and Kool and the Gang. More obscure influences include Nils Landgren, the Pocket Dwellers, Ceux Qui Marchent Debout, Bela Fleck and Jaco Pastorius. Add a sprinkling of K-Os, Cake and Jurassic 5 and you have one of the most diverse acts around, while keeping a dance crowd happy. The band performs original material as well.

Saw these guys at The Barroom in Corner Brook - both nights actually. It's great to be able to look up and see some familiar faces. Members of The Idlers, Sean Panting Band, and Chris Kirby & The Marquee combined with some faces I didn't know equaled a night of funky dancing times. I hope they come back and play to a packed house next time - Corner Brook needs more funk!

Lucky for you, it has a little and it comes in CD form! I have 5 copies of Fists Of Funk (2007) available, so drop me a line to get your hands on one. How do you get in touch?

Sleepless Nights

Since the release of their debut album in 2004, The Sleepless Nights have grown from a modest trio into a six-piece wall of sound that equally evokes Eric’ Trip and ELO. With multiple songwriters and vocalists, The Sleepless Nights cover a lot of musical ground while maintaining a coherent sound of dense yet ambient indie-rock. Their third album, Turn Into Vapour, will be released in January and the group will be on the road until their van breaks.

Alright, is saw these guys at The Seahorse in Halifax while over there playing a show myself. They were excellent. Then I found out they were in my hometown of Corner Brook a week later. No shit, I'll be there. Well, they sounded just as great (better I think, thanks to that new sound system at the bar, hehe). They put off a wonderful show and were great to talk to afterwards. I managed to snag 3 copies of Turn Into Vapour (2008) and 2 copies of Hang Up(2006/07). I hear they're planning on coming back later this summer. I highly advise you check it out when they do.

The Mountains & The Trees

From Website

Local yokel rising crust folk singer, whatever that means. Described as a "real hootenanny" by mother. You decide!

Within the community of Corner Brook (and, indeed, the province of Newfoundland), there are, at any given time, dozens of musicians willing to get together and play a show for the love of playing music, with nothing expected in return. They are all welcome to join The Mountains & The Trees. Formed by Jon Janes, The Mountains & The Trees started with a few phone calls to friends and the simple words "Wanna be in a band?" At any given moment, the make-up of The Mountains & The Trees could be 1 - 100 (well, probably not that many, but, it could be!) and no two shows promise to be alike. Willing to give any type of music a try, The Mountains & The Trees promise to entertain, whether it be 1 or 100 (there's that number again). Are you a Mountain? Are you a Tree? If you find yourself humming along or tapping your feet at shows, you're both, and we thank-you for contributing!

Well, let's be honest - this is me.. I'd be silly not to sell my own record as well as others. Document (2007) is a solo acoustic venture featuring Jon Janes on vocals, guitar, and mouth harp. Recorded over 3 nights in First United Church in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, it features 15 songs ranging from upbeat to reflective, touching on topics like love, life, and learning.

It is a limited edition release of only 90 copies which features a letter-press cardboard CD case with 5-layer silkscreen art (handmade by Janes), a photographic postcard done in a traditional darkroom (also by Janes), and a small package of dirt and seeds. All this comes in a hand-sewn vinyl sleeve with additional silkscreen art. Again, only 90 of these exist and currently only approx 12 remain. Drop an e-mail to burntca-AT-hotmail.com if you'd like a copy.

What Is Blue Robot Records?

Blue Robot Records is a suitcase distro based out of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada. It is run by Jon Janes of one-man-band The Mountains & The Trees. It was started to fill a void in the local market for independent CDs from local and touring bands. With a simple model meant to keep things cheap, Blue Robot Records hopes you can find what you're looking for.
